Summary:

This is a poetry book. It inspires students to look for numbers in unexpected, as well as everyday, places. Specifically it shows how zero has a value, both quantitative and personal.

Classroom Ideas/Lesson Ideas

The book would be ideal in introducing or reinforcing number sense. Teachers often have warm up activities, such as Morning Meeting. Some classrooms also have a daily number. Such activities, can range from modeling through pictures, tally marks, graphs, number sentences, statements, decomposition of numbers, place value, and so on. In addition, such activities can also allow students an opportunity to express themselves creatively and to share personal connections to numbers and math content.  I believe this book would be great within this context! 

More over it could allow for inter-curricullar activities that incorporate literacy, science, and art. For instance, students could look for a particular number displayed in nature, or their surroundings, and contribute to writing and illustrating a class book that represents a particular number in various ways.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this book. It really helps children interpret the meaning of the number zero and understand what the value of zero is using real-life examples.
