Recommended Grade Level:  3rd Grade

Common Core Standards:

CCSS 3.OA     Operations & Algebraic Thinking
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division.
2.  Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers
3.  Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities
4.  Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers
6.  Understand division as an unknown-factor problem

CCSS 3.NF      Number & Operations -- Fractions
Develop understanding of fractions as numbers.
1.  Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned in b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice:

CCSS MATH PRACTICE MP1:  Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
CCSS MATH PRACTICE MP2:  Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
CCSS MATH PRACTICE MP4:  Model with mathematics.

Summary:

When Ma gave Sam and Victoria a dozen cookies to share, they were delighted. Then the doorbell rang, and rang, and rang. As more children arrived, sharing required other division problems so everyone would have equal amounts. The final ring of the doorbell, however, brings good news.

This is a great book to support a unit on multiplication, division, and fractions.  It allows students to use manipulatives to solve a real-world division problem:  how to divide up cookies among friends.  It also allows for differentiated group work based on skill level.

Classroom Ideas:

This book can be used to teach math concepts in multiplication, division, and fractions.  Manipulative can be used to show how the cookies can be divided up both as whole number division problems and also as fractions.  Students can role play as the division problems come up in the book and they can also work in groups to continue with the story using their own amounts of cookies or make up their own division stories using The Doorbell Rang as their guide.
