Author- Jerry Pallotta

Illustrator- Rob Bolster

Recommended Grade Level 3rd and 5th  Grade

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.1
Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/bas the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP4 Model with mathematics.
Mathematically proficient students can apply the mathematics they know to solve problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace. In early grades, this might be as simple as writing an addition equation to describe a situation. In middle grades, a student might apply proportional reasoning to plan a school event or analyze a problem in the community. By high school, a student might use geometry to solve a design problem or use a function to describe how one quantity of interest depends on another. Mathematically proficient students who can apply what they know are comfortable making assumptions and approximations to simplify a complicated situation, realizing that these may need revision later. They are able to identify important quantities in a practical situation and map their relationships using such tools as diagrams, two-way tables, graphs, flowcharts and formulas. They can analyze those relationships mathematically to draw conclusions. They routinely interpret their mathematical results in the context of the situation and reflect on whether the results make sense, possibly improving the model if it has not served its purpose.

Summary
In this book, people have to share an apple and it shows how to cut the apple to divide it fairly. The pictures give s very clear description how to cut an apple. It also  uses a combination of the science of apples to identify different fractions such as 1/2, and so on. It gives the readers a real life connection to math through familiarity of apples.

Rating
(4)The Apple Fractions is a bright colorful book that uses apples to illustrate fractions. These pictures will allow students to make text-world connections. The gives clear precise language, extremely kid friendly.  However, the length of the book might lose third grades, I will suggest breaking up the book into parts and give subtopics.

Classroom Ideas/Lesson Ideas
This book easy to do a great hands on activity with it. The teacher students could have real apples in the class cut into fractions (the students can't cut them for obvious reasons...). The students could do work with equivalent fractions by trading pieces of apple so that each trade is "fair."
